The Search Supervisor role is a leadership role as well as a managerial one.  The Supervisor is responsible for management aspects of the Search Engine Marketing team, including helping sell the service, leadership of the team and strategic thinking.  The Supervisor is a key liaison between the SEM team and the client, as well as with Carat’s account and service-line leadership.


The Search Supervisor has several important roles: building the SEM team, overseeing SEM operations for a set group of accounts, providing strategic guidance for SEM services on specified accounts, and building and maintaining relationships with clients at mid-senior levels.  The Supervisor helps define SEM best practices and communications strategies.




Search Engine Marketing:


  • Responsible for accurately estimating, timing and scoping projects
  • Responsible for timely delivery of projects
  • Create budgets, and performance forecasts for clients
  • Build and maintain relationships with client counterparts, offline media teams, creative, etc
  • Maintain relationships with search community and continue to develop publisher and higher relationships for exchange of ideas
  • Demonstrate ability to sell Carat and all its components
  • Communicate and evangelize new techniques and learnings within the Carat network
  • Evaluate new search vendors
  • Play active role in sales pitches involving Carat search solutions
  • Roll out best practices and processes – SEO and Paid Search
  • Work with other service lines to identify integration opportunities


Client & Internal Relationships:

  • Build trusting, collaborative relationships with clients at appropriate levels
  • Maintain client relationships at appropriate levels
  • Manage expectations of clients and deliverables
  • Accurately represent the client’s point of view when reviewing work, leverage this perspective when providing feedback to team and presenting to client
  • Identifies opportunities to offer other agency service line offerings to existing clients
  • Grow business opportunities within current clients, where appropriate
  • Participates and presents in New Business efforts and presentations, where appropriate
  • Capable of effectively managing up and down the reporting structure


Strategic Thinking & Leadership:

  • Provide strategic input for search campaigns internally and externally
  • Demonstrate problem solving and intervention when necessary
  • Understand and analyze the root causes of problems and develop ways to rectify
  • Guide and assist staff to arrive at potential solutions to problems/issues
  • Ensure key information is provided to team regarding client issues, internal agency issues, changes in account status, etc.
  • Help to create and negotiate yearly client contracts and supplemental proposals and manage account profitability
  • Assist in training team on Carat Search tools, internal procedures and best practices
  • Train, motivate and develop a search group
  • Construct and deliver accurate, honest and timely performance management documents


Communication Skills:

  • Establishes and maintains communications process with clients, digital and offline media teams, etc. for each piece of business within the team
  • Directs the development of client presentations and other important communication, communication that is clear, compelling and persuasive
  • Lead client presentations

  • Adapts communication style to relevant audience
  • Links communication to audience’s concerns and perspectives
  • Moves audience to desired action through clear and persuasive delivery of information



  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 5+ years of interactive media, digital marketing or strategic planning experience
  • 4+ years of Search Engine Marketing experience
  • Proven leadership ability – managed a team of planners & supervisors
  • Strong client service experience and comfort
  • Knowledge of offline media
  • High-level proficiency in MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook
